Colonial Urbanism in North America 1500-1800

Fall 2012

Victoria Sanger, instructor

European urbanism shaped the colonial cities in North America. The first part of the course investigated the planning theory and forms of European cities and how European colonizers—French, Spanish and English—brought this urban culture to the New World. The second part of the seminar focused on case studies in North America. Students made presentations that considered the early development of colonial towns in comparison to their European counterparts.
