Communicating Complex Ideas in Public Settings

Visual Studies

Spring 2013

Ed Schlossberg, instructor

The course explored the challenges and opportunities of trying to design a communications experience in a public setting. The class combined exploration of the ideas and challenges that exist when attempting this type of design, presentations of some designs that have been accomplished, discussions of the need for and value of creating such designs and finally an assignment for teams of the class to create designs.

There is no specific book or essay that explores the design issue of communicating in public places. This course explored several forms of media that present a look at the problem from the point of view of it being a form issue, anthropological issue or sociological issue. The main emphasis of the course was affording students with the tools better examine the world around them.
