Conservation Seminar: Metals

Historic Preservation

Fall 2012

Richard Pieper, instructor

This seminar reviewed the structural and decorative uses of metals in buildings and monuments. The metals reviewed include wrought iron, cast iron and steel; copper and copper alloys such as bronze and brass; lead; tin; zinc; aluminum; and nickel and chromium alloys of the modern period such as monel, nickel silver and stainless steel. The seminar examined history of manufacture and use; mechanisms of deterioration and corrosion; and conservation, repair, and replication.

Participants prepared an annotated bibliography on any aspect of architectural metals–history, manufacture, use or conservation–and worked in groups to prepare a metals walking tour of a NYC neighborhood.
