Geometries + Envelopes: Animated Computation 1

Visual Studies

Fall 2012

John Whitelaw, instructor

Geometries + Envelopes was an introduction to 3D digital modeling using Autodesk’s Maya. This six week workshop introduced a full suite of production-proven tools and work flows for the creation, manipulation and translation of Polygon, NURBS and Subdivision Surface geometry.

Lectures began with introductions to basic notions of geometry types and creation methods and then introduced students to a series of critical modeling work flows culled from those being developed and employed in contemporary architectural practices. By focusing on work flows in lieu of tools, the intent was to gain a more facile and flexible approach to the formal manipulation of computational geometry. We moved past the limits of conceptual form into the realm of modeling material reality.
