Introduction to GIS for Preservationists

Historic Preservation

Spring 2013

Jennifer Most, instructor

This course reinvigorated historic archives and old maps through a geographic information system (GIS) to make preservation arguments notoriously difficult to represent. After covering the basics of GIS and mapping statistics, we mined the existing databases for relevant information and expanded upon them with survey data gathered from the previous semester. The final objective was to create maps that analyzed statistics of our sample study area by identifying patterns of significant features and buildings that were threatened by outside forces.
