Post-Sandy Preservation: Response, Recovery + Resiliency

Historic Preservation Studio

Spring 2013

Ward Dennis, critic

This studio was directly influenced by Hurricane Sandy, the super storm which hit New York City in October 2012. Students analyzed the impact on local historic sites by the hurricane, and worked to develop preservation strategies to combat future hurricane damage. Two case study areas, the Rockaways and Red Hook, were chosen for their abundance of eligible yet undesignated historic resources combined with their susceptibility to major hurricane and flood damage. The resulting research has the potential to guide preservationists in informing policy and action before the next storm hits.
