Sound Structure: Outdoor Concert Shell in Fort Hero State Park

Advanced Architecture Studio 4

Spring 2013

Robert Marino, critic

The shell is the beautiful result of necessity, efficiency and material transformation in Nature. In architecture it has been the inspiration for many of the most notable structures of our art form. The shell as a sound device is also a well-known model, establishing the structural basis of many instruments, in which the maker’s craft and a material’s tendencies combine to reveal true form. It is the purpose of this studio to explore the shell as a sound device, a structural method, and most importantly, as an aesthetic inspiration.
