Special Topics in Architecture: Darkness + Architecture

Barnard + Columbia Undergraduate Program

Spring 2013

Peter Zuspan, instructor

This course looked at topics such as darkness, horror, the grotesque, the abject and the sublime, with a specific focus on the uncanny in architecture. Operating as a think-tank, students considered the nature of these sensational, anti-transparent, non-utopian threads in architecture and how they can be retooled and used in a constructive manner in design outside the box of fantasy, fiction and the macabre.
