The Development of Paris

New York/Paris

Spring 2013

Andrew Ayers, instructor

This course examined Paris’s built environment over the 2,000 years from the Roman conquest up to the present day, tracing the evolution of the city’s architecture. Since any attempt at comprehensiveness would have been doomed to failure, we concentrated on selected themes and periods. The course was organized as a series of site visits roughly in chronological order. Since the vestiges of past eras are inevitably fragmentary, the readings for this course were important in order to put into context what students saw in the field.
